Our Story
HEALING THE BLACK FAMILY = CREATING BLACK EXCELLENCE
Founded by Aerica Karriem in 2005, began as Neighborhood Connections, INC. We are a 501 (c)3 non-profit dedicated to educating and preserving low to moderate-income families, people of color and increasing opportunities to gain independence.
In doing so, we are able to further our efforts in our communities and educate and empower (POC) with additional resources for individuals and families.

How We Got Started
Realizing it was a need in our communities across the USA we needed to go back to the basics. It was time to clearly understand that if we didn’t save ourselves and people of color that no one was going to come to save us. We needed to learn how to become independent, self-sufficient, self-starters and reach higher so we can learn to pay it forward.
Well, what does it mean to go back to the basics? What does it mean to take back our communities? Here are some examples just to name a few:
- Agriculture and Farming
- Entrepreneurship
- Trade Schools -Shorter learning curves
- Teach women how to be mothers, stand in their purpose and recognize their power
- Teach men how to become fathers, protectors, and providers
- Teach our own children and commit to their future
Then we have the injustices.
The injustices of a racial system. As years go by we settle because we feel like there is nothing we can do but to vote. We feel like there is nothing we can do but to be murdered on camera and there are no severe consequences for the wrongdoer. So what do we do? We control our narrative as much as we can. Period!
You may say, “Oh Healing The Black Family, INC is making this up, All lives matter.” Okay, if that were true. Why do we need as follows for people of color:
- Lending Reform
- Police Reform
- Prison Reform
- Education Reform
- Generational Poverty
- Severe Wealth Gap
- Racial Discrimination
- Mental Health Reform, Yes! There are so many people walking around with mental illnesses they weren’t born with but severe circumstances in their upbringing and feeling like there is no one to safely talk to so they keep it inside.
Again, we believe taking things back to the basics matter and we must save ourselves.
"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”
So we hope you will partner with our organization not to have hatred for others but to uplift people of color and empower them to increase opportunities and independence for people of color, their families, and the communities they live in.
